People gather for Remembrance Day ceremonies in Quad Counties

Remembrance Day ceremonies have taken place across the Quad Counties.

The two largest were held in Port Hawkesbury and Antigonish.

Port Hawkesbury’s ceremony took place at the town cenotaph Monday morning.

Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, the town’s mayor, said there are constant reminders of sacrifice all around us.

“Philpott, MacSween, Embree, Kennedy, Reynolds and MacDonald are not only streets in our town,” she said. “They are also the surnames of our town’s war heroes who gave their lives in World War I.”

Chisholm-Beaton said we need to remember the sacrifices of those who served beyond Nov. 11.

She said there are many ways to do that.

“We carry them with us when we vote in elections, when we volunteer, when we care for others less fortunate, when we lift each other up with peace, friendship and understanding.”

Antigonish’s ceremony took place at Chisholm Park Monday morning.

The event included remarks by Randy Delorey, the local MLA and provincial health minister, Laurie Boucher, Antigonish’s mayor, and Owen McCarron, the warden of Antigonish Co.
