Police officer says Desmond had been kicked out before

The 12th day of testimony at the Desmond Fatality Inquiry in Guysborough has adjourned.

Canso RCMP detachment officer Burns Anderson told the inquiry about an interaction he had with Lionel Desmond in November of 2016, a month before Desmond killed his wife, daughter, mother, and himself in their Upper Big Tracadie home in January 2017.

Anderson said Desmond called the police detachment because his wife, Shanna Desmond, was several hours late returning from a shopping trip in Halifax.

Anderson said, when he called Desmond for more information, Desmond said she was no longer missing.

“She was safe and had returned home, and she was not overdo, I think she was avoiding him, and she was kicking him out, their marriage was over,” he said. “He genuinely sounded, just, sad. He spoke slowly, softly, there was no anger in his voice at all.”

Anderson said Desmond told him he was packing his bags to leave the house.

Testimony continues Wednesday.
