Polls open for band councillor roles in Wagmatcook

Band members are going to the polls in a First Nations community in Victoria Co.

29 candidates for band council in the Wagmatcook First Nation originally filed their nomination papers in May.

Three of those candidates did not make it to the final ballot, so there are 26 people running for seven council positions.

Wagmatcook Chief Norman Francis Bernard was the only person to put their name forward for chief ahead of the deadline to file nomination papers, so he’s been acclaimed to a fifth term.

Bernard was first elected in the 2010 band council election.
