15 women’s leadership conference seats privately sponsored following Richmond Co. funding denial

The mayor of Port Hawkesbury says 15 Richmond Co. seats at a local women’s leadership school have been sponsored by private donors and businesses in the area.

That comes after Richmond Co. councillors denied a funding request for seats at the Leadership School for Women, a conference which offers municipal and band level government training for women in Cape Breton and northeastern Nova Scotia.

Port Hawkesbury Mayor Brenda Chisholm-Beaton gave the update at Tuesday’s regular council meeting.

After, Chisholm-Beaton said she’s spoken to some of the Richmond Co. councillors and doesn’t think they all agree with the decision.

“Perhaps the response from the community will allow them to have a sober second thought,” she said. “I would like to see a little bit more discussion at their council table. If that will be the go forward, I can’t say for certain, but I certainly hope that it’s not the end of that story.”

Chisholm-Beaton said it’s very encouraging to see the community in Richmond Co. step up and fund seats for women to participate in the school.
