Port Hawkesbury mayor says Destination Reeves Street dominates 2019 and 2020

The mayor of Port Hawkesbury says the thing she’s happiest with from 2019 is the progress they’ve made on Destination Reeves Street, and the biggest thing she’s looking forward to in 2020 is the second phase of the project.

During her year end interview, Brenda Chisholm-Beaton said despite changes to the proposed design, the removal of advance greens, she believes the work has done a lot to make the town more attractive.

Chisholm-Beaton told The Hawk, even though they have just finished the first phase, the construction has gone well.

“The end result, overall, for Destination Reeves Street is a safer, more walkable, aesthetically pleasing main street.”

Chisholm-Beaton said they’ve now turned their attention to the next step.

She said the second phase will have a split focus.

“Which, essentially, is like one foot on Destination Reeves Street and our main throughway; to the launch of waterfront development.”

Chisholm-Beaton said the end of the Destination Reeves Street pilot project will bring a final decision on the inclusion of advance greens on the street, which were in the initial plans, but NSTIR said were not required to maintain safety.

She said she wants to see the project through and confirmed to The Hawk that she will reoffer in the 2020 municipal election.

“It’s safe to say that I am most definitely going to be running for mayor again,” she said. “I really enjoyed my term and I am very enthusiastic about the future of the Town of Port Hawkesbury.”

Chisholm-Beaton said she thinks she’s done good work this year, and hopes residents will give her another mandate.
