Port Hawkesbury Paper reps try to clarify information about industry, local practices

Port Hawkesbury Paper reps say there’s a lot of negative media reports about forestry and forest practices.

PHP reps presented to Richmond Co. councillors Monday night.

Andrew Fedora said they have access to 522,000 hectares of Crown land under their agreement, but with restrictions and limitations, they end up only harvesting about 1 per cent of that annually.

Fedora told The Hawk they never really defend the accusations.

“Some people believe a lot of high-quality hardwood is going to the biomass plant in Port Hawkesbury- they also believe we actually own and run that biomass plant,” he said. “The reality is, we certainly don’t harvest high-quality hardwood for the biomass plant.”

Fedora said they reach out every few years to answer questions or concerns, but there’s been a lot of negative media coverage province-wide over the past few months, so it made sense to present now.
