Province predicts 1500 COVID-19 cases by June

There could be 1500 cases of COVID-19 in the province by the end of June according to pandemic modeling released at a press conference Tuesday.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Robert Strang said those are the numbers taking into account current public health measures, and it would be more than 6000 without them.

Dr. Strang said they haven’t projected potential deaths.

“We don’t really want to get into modeling death rates,” he said. “There are a lot of other factors that can go in, so if you have a number of long-term facility outbreaks, for instance, your mortality rate is going to be higher.”

Dr. Strang said they’re predicting 35 cases in hospital, with a third in intensive care, at the pandemic’s peak; but that would be 85, also with a third in ICU, without public health measures.

He said that would overwhelm the provincial healthcare system.

The province announced 43 new cases Tuesday; there are 517 province-wide, and 40 in the eastern zone.
