There won’t be a ballot question asking Richmond Co. residents if they want a mayor.
Brian Marchand, the municipality’s warden, says councillors have been reviewing the question for a year.
After June’s regular municipal council meeting Monday night, Marchand told The Hawk staff members didn’t get a response from Elections Nova Scotia officials in time.
“Without having the information, and with the election coming in the fall, (it) probably wasn’t going to be (enough) time to gather the information we wanted.”
Marchand said councillors directed staff members to explore adding a plebiscite to the October election ballot after a number of motions to add a mayor or conduct public consultation didn’t go forward.
He said the last option for members of this council was to add a plebiscite question to the upcoming municipal election.
“It’s been an issue that’s definitely been discussed quite a bit by this council in the last year or so,” he said. “Finally, it’ll be for the next council to decide.”
That means the earliest Richmond Co. residents could vote for a mayor is 2024.
