Residents express concern regarding Antigonish rail crossing

Some Antigonish town councillors say they’re hearing complaints about a town rail crossing.

They said they’ve heard concerns from residents regarding the shape of the crossing at the east end of Main St.- near St. Martha’s Regional Hospital- at June’s regular town council meeting Monday.

After, Laurie Boucher, Antigonish’s mayor, said town officials can’t just step in and do the repairs themselves.

“We can’t take it on ourselves- we’ll be probably putting the town in a spot where we wouldn’t want to be if something went wrong,” she said. “It’s not our responsibility, (it’s) not our jurisdiction.”

Boucher said several councillors and town staff members have reached out to rail company reps.

She said they were told it would be very costly to fix, but they’re reviewing the situation.
