Sisters of St. Martha celebrates 125 years

A long-time religious congregation in Antigonish is celebrating a major milestone.

The Sisters of St. Martha has reached the end of its 125 year. It began on July 16, 2025, and ends July 29, 2026.

“Throughout this memorable year, there have been many special projects and celebrations – large and small – have brought our community together in gratitude, reflection and joy,” says the congregation in a statement on Facebook.

To mark the occasion, there were several events throughout over the past 12 months including plays, an art exhibit as well as a mass.

The Sisters of St. Martha also closed a large chapter this past year after ending a mission agreement with the St. Martha’s Hospital after 30 years.

The congregation said it was time to walk away. The province chose not to go with a different sponsor but instead align their services and policies with every other hospital in the province.

Reaching their 125 year, the congregation says milestones are always joyfully celebrated, and they are “deeply thankful” to everyone who helped make the year meaningful.
