The senior climatologist at Environment Canada says we could all use some good news right now, and the spring forecast could provide it.
Spring officially arrived early Friday.
Environment Canada’s Dave Phillips tells The Hawk it’s shaping up to be a nice season in the Quad Counties.
“We think that this spring is going to be milder than normal, particularly in April, May and early June,” he says. “That spring time, we see it will be actually, maybe, a little drier than normal, but clearly milder than normal.”
Phillips says that doesn’t mean we’re necessarily done with the winter weather just yet.
He says the end of the season doesn’t mean we jump right into spring.
“We still can usually count on about 25 centimetres of snow (and) six days of snow in late March and into April,” he says. “I don’t think there’s been an April without some snow in your area.”
Phillips says this is one of the earliest springs on record.
He says it’s the earliest first day of the season since the late 19th century.
