SRCE Director says weekend tragedy even harder on kids

The Executive Director for the Strait Regional Centre for Education says this weekend’s tragedy is hard for anyone, let alone children, to understand.

Paul Landry says not being able to come together to grieve and access in-school supports, because of COVID-19, makes it even harder to process what happened.

Landry tells The Hawk they’re working around COVID-19 restrictions by checking-in with students and families remotely, and are ready to assist struggling students, get them the help they need or refer them to a professional.

“We know that these days are not easy for our students, staff, and families, and our school community, so it’s important for them to know that there are resources and people who are there that can help them,” he says. “I just think the most important thing that we can do is to let students know that we are there for them, and that we’re willing to listen and help.”

Landry says teachers, administrators, guidance counsellors, and school psychologists are trained to help students through difficult times like these.
