Staff to investigate solutions to Inverness beach garbage

Garbage has started to become a problem for a section of Inverness beach, but it’s not from careless beachgoers.

Years ago, an area near the beach was a dump.

Municipality of the County of Inverness council directed staff to investigate possible solutions at January’s regular council meeting on Jan. 2.

Warden Betty Ann MacQuarrie tells The Hawk the dumping stopped years ago, but the garbage remains.

“It was used as a garbage dump, and there’s, like, parts from old cars and rusted out things that were used and discarded,” she says. “They’ve been covered up by the sand and the tide, and now it’s time to do a major cleanup of the beach because it is a beautiful beach, so we want it in pristine condition.”

MacQuarrie says they aren’t sure what a solution will look like yet.

She says they’ll have a better idea when staff reports back.
