It’s “Coach K Day” at StFX.
Steve Konchalski has served as head coach of the StFX men’s basketball team for 46 years.
Konchalski is hanging up his whistle, with his last official day on the job Wednesday.
Andy Hakin, the university’s president, tells The Hawk Coach K ends his run with 919 career wins in 1,495 games.
“(It’s an) incredible career,” he says. “46 years at StFX- and the loyalty that he’s given us over those years- has just been fantastic.”
Hakin says Coach K had a huge impact on the young men who went through the X-Men basketball program.
He says the entire community cared about Coach K, and they wanted to give something back.
“Talking about a man that has had such a storied career, it really is quite incredible, and the love that this community has for him is really quite incredible, so it’s only natural,” he says. “He’s a fantastic contributor, and when someone’s had a career like that, I think it’s good to stand back and just say ‘Thank you- we appreciate everything that you’ve done’.”
Hakin says it’s only right to celebrate that.
Konchalski will join The Hawk Morning Show after the 8:30 a.m. news.
