UPD: Icy storm puts tens of thousands in the dark

70,000 homes and businesses are without power Saturday as an icy winter storm grips the province.

Power isn’t expected to be returned to many areas until Saturday afternoon.

Road conditions are poor across the province, with snow over a layer of ice.

Snow is still coming down. It isn’t expected to stop until Saturday afternoon.

A powerful storm packing high winds, rain, snow, and freezing rain is gripping Nova Scotia.

As of 2 a.m. on Saturday, more than 50,000 customers of Nova Scotia Power lost their lights.

The utility brought on some 500 staff to work on the lines when the conditions permit.

The storm is expected to stick around for much of the day on Saturday.
