Synishin stepping down as Bulldogs coach

The Antigonish Bulldogs will need a new head coach before the 2019-20 Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League season.

Dave Synishin has announced he’s stepping down.

He spent the past two seasons behind the Bulldogs’ bench; before that, he spent 18 years with the StFX women’s hockey team, including 14 seasons as head coach.

Synishin tells The Hawk work commitments make it too difficult to do both jobs.

“It compromises your coaching, you’re not able to develop the players you want- at the end of the day I missed a lot of practices, and it’s hard to have certain expectations when you’re not there, when the coach can’t be there,” he says. “It’s just a personal decision- it’s pretty well impossible to do the two of them.”

Antigonish lost to the Strait Pirates in seven games in the opening round of the playoffs.

Team officials say the search for Synishin’s replacement is already underway.
