Thompson says health care experience helps as candidate

Michelle Thompson of Cloverdale is the provincial PC candidate for Antigonish in the next election.

Thompson has worked as a registered nurse for 29 years. Currently, she’s the CEO of RK MacDonald Nursing Home in Antigonish. She also teaches nursing part-time and is a part-time therapist for a non-profit organization.

Thompson says at its core, politics and health care are about the same thing: helping people.

“My responsibility as an MLA would be to work on behalf of the constituents in my riding and also to advocate for the community,” she says. “And certainly in my role as a registered nurse, I have done that. I’ve done that individually with families; I’ve done that with individuals themselves; and I’ve done that with my community.

One thing top of mind for Thompson in the riding of Antigonish is the tough year small and medium sized businesses have had, she said during a telephone interview.

While she doesn’t claim to be an expert on the needs of businesses, Thompson feels her experience advocating for others as a health care professional will serve her well in helping people and local businesses get back on their feet as the province reopens.

“I have a lot of confidence that the community members have the knowledge and the skills that they need to improve things, and I want to be a part of that solution.”
