Port Hawkesbury town councillors have approved funding for business recruitment as part of a port development project.
Town officials approved a $5,000 contribution toward the $140,000 price tag for the Strait Area Economic Zone at March’s regular council meeting Tuesday night; the motion is contingent on funding from their counterparts with the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and their municipal partners in Richmond Co. and Guysborough.
After the meeting, Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, the mayor of the town, said there are other stakeholders involved.
“We have some industry leaders at the table,” she said. “We have representation from our (Eastern Strait Regional Enterprise Network) and also our Cape Breton REN, the Cape Breton Partnership, and we also have membership from our Strait Area Chamber of Commerce.”
Chisholm-Beaton said the goal of the project is to create a strategy and prepare materials to market their port.
