Town officials plan to re-open fitness facility Sunday

The mayor of Port Hawkesbury says they’ve got a new gym plan following more than 500 responses to a public survey.

Saturday was the last day of operations for the Port Hawkesbury YMCA, but town officials will soon start to run the gym themselves.

Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, the town’s mayor, tells The Hawk the lease stays with YMCA reps until the end of February, so the gym will be closed while they pack up and town officials review the space.

“Even though we won’t have the property for that leased space until the beginning of (March), we can still do some improvements through that time,” she says. “That won’t delay anything.”

Chisholm-Beaton says they’re re-opening March 1, and will introduce a new gym membership.

She says the “Fit Pass”, which has discounts for longer terms as well as students and seniors, includes access to gym facilities, public swims, public skates, fitness classes and drop-in sports.

Chisholm-Beaton says there will be an open house with information regarding rates, hours, and staff members on hand to answer questions from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.
