Town officials say bids on intersection redesign came back high

Antigonish‘s mayor says bids on the redesign of an intersection in the town came back much higher than anticipated.

Town officials are planning a number of changes at the intersection of Main St. and Hawthorne St.; they include an island in the middle of the intersection, new traffic lights and new lines.

After January’s regular town council meeting, Laurie Boucher, the mayor of Antigonish, said they were seriously considering three bids, but all three came back high.

“Staff is going to go back over and try to have more of a breakdown from each of the bids,” she said. “(They’ll) see where that goes, and see if we can tighten up some of the bids a little bit, and just have more clarity on what’s actually being provided.”

Boucher said they budgeted roughly $400,000 for the project, but bids came back in the $600,000-range.

She said they still plan to start work following StFX convocation in May, and be finished before the Highland Games in July.
