People between the ages of 75 and 79 may now book COVID-19 vaccination appointments.
Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Robert Strang made the announcement at Friday’s COVID-19 update.
Appointments had previously only been available to those over 80, or between 60 and 64 for the AstraZeneca vaccine.
Dr. Strang says it’s important to continue to vaccinate as many people as possible, as soon as possible, that’s why getting the vaccine is the next thing they’re asking people to do to fight this pandemic.
“Taking the necessary steps to keep each other and our communities safe,” he says. “Think not just about yourself but think about your community as you make your decision around getting vaccinated.”
Dr. Strang says some people aren’t going to be able to get the vaccine.
He says even some who get it won’t be as protected as others.
“Like with flu vaccine, because of underlying health conditions or age, they may not get as good of an immune response as others,” he says. “They’re relying on us, the rest of us, to get vaccinated to protect them as well.”
He also announced five new cases of COVID-19, including a school-based case first reported Thursday, in Central Zone Friday.
Dr. Strang says there’s also a probable case in Central Zone, it’s being treated as a positive case.
There are 27 active infections remaining in the province.
