Vandalism not answer for alleged Nazi colony- MP

There’s been a rash of vandalism following media reports an alleged Nazi sympathizer network is buying up land and recruiting like-minded Germans for community in Richmond Co.

Vigilante vandals have defaced signs belonging to a local real estate agent named in the articles; swastikas, expletives and “Nazi” have been spray painted on some of the signs in the area.

At least two other signs, which are not directly connected to the articles, have also been defaced- a pro-life sign and a resort billboard on Hwy 105.

Mike Kelloway, the MP for Cape Breton-Canso, tells The Hawk Nazi ideology is totally abhorrent, but acts of vandalism aren’t the answer.

“We don’t stand for bigotry, we don’t stand for racism, but we also don’t stand for destroying people’s property, or making accusations that may or may not be unfounded.”

Kelloway says vandalizing signs doesn’t solve the problem.

He says these types of issues need to be handled by the authorities.

“Go to the proper channels as opposed to taking it into your own hands to deface (private) property or demean someone that may have nothing to do with what’s alleged,” he says. “We need to allow the proper bodies to do the deep dive- we are a country of laws.”

Several of the people named in the articles have denied the accusations.
