Antigonish Co.‘s warden says municipal officials want to talk to rail company reps regarding rail crossings on local properties.
Owen McCarron says changes have been made along the Cape Breton and Central Nova Scotia Railway lines that limit property owners’ access to their own land.
After June’s regular municipal council meeting Tuesday night, McCarron said railway reps have randomly removed some private crossings in the municipality.
“We have a few farmers in our community that have been impacted,” he said. “We have land owners who have forestry properties that have been impacted.”
McCarron said the removal of a private crossing in Linwood left two deep holes on both sides of the track.
He said there are safety concerns they want company reps to address.
“We’re going to press them for some decisions on how they treat people who are looking for level crossings that have traditionally used the crossings at various spots along the rail line,” he said. “We’re going to work for our residents on this one.”
McCarron said municipal officials were scheduled to meet with railway reps Tuesday, but the rail reps weren’t able to make it, so the meeting has been moved to July.
