The warden of the Municipality of the District of Guysborough says new government funding will allow them to add two new buildings to their solid waste facility.
Vernon Pitts says the two new compost treatment buildings will cost about $1.8 million.
Federal and provincial officials announced about $1.3 million in support for the project Friday.
Pitts tells The Hawk the funding was a long time coming.
“We’ve been after funding for this enhanced facility for a couple years now, but you’ve got to wait for the right program to come out,” he says. “There’s been a certain amount of work done on site there previously that we’ve undertaken on our own in regards to the pads and the area has been excavated- its pretty well ready for shovels in the ground (whenever) we can get the tender out.”
Pitts says they hope to issue the tender by early September.
He says the upgrades are an important step for solid waste management in the municipality.
“This allows our site to be fully self-contained, which is fantastic,” he says. “Any water on the facility is all sent to a settling pond- from there it’s sent away for treatment.”
Pitts says they hope to start work before the first snowfall, and be finished by spring.
