Warden says local political leaders need to help recruit new physicians

The warden of Antigonish Co. says town and county officials have a role to play in physician recruitment.

At January’s regular municipal council meeting Tuesday night, Owen McCarron, the municipality’s warden, told his fellow council members he and Laurie Boucher, the mayor of Antigonish, started the discussion with members of the St. Martha’s Regional Hospital Foundation a few months earlier.

He said they attended a meeting with their hospital foundation counterparts recently.

After Tuesday night’s meeting, McCarron said it’s important for them to help convince physicians to relocate to this area.

“We take a proactive role and we look at the importance of showcasing our community,” he said. “I think we recognize that we need to do a better job- we need to be involved in that.”

McCarron said they plan to stay involved because it’s an ongoing issue with eventual retirements and competition in the recruitment process.
