Warden says municipality could switch to mayoral system by 2020

The warden of Richmond Co. says the municipality could have a mayor in 2020.

Jason MacLean says residents would vote for a mayor, as is done in towns, if they make the change; elected councillors currently select a warden.

He says the topic came up at a recent meeting, and residents seem to be in favour.

MacLean tells The Hawk residents will make the final call.

“For me, it would really depend on the public- whatever the public wants,” he says. “If it’s an overwhelming majority saying that they would like to move towards a mayor system, for me, it would be the residents that make that call.”

MacLean says municipal officials have to notify members of the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board at least nine months in advance if they want a mayor system for the 2020 municipal elections.

He says they have already gathered some information on the idea.

“With regards to the information gathered for the strategic plan, (it) was basically three-to-one in favour of a mayor system.”

MacLean says he wants to make sure residents are informed and are aware of all factors before they make any decision.
