Warden says supporting AAHS project is the right thing to do

The warden of Antigonish Co. says they’re aware of the benefits affordable housing brings to the community.

Members of the Antigonish Affordable Housing Society recently announced plans for their latest project- a 15-unit building on Appleseed Dr. near Antigonish Education Centre and Saint Andrew Junior School.

Antigonish Co. councillors are contributing $100,000, which is spread across five years; Antigonish town councillors are contributing the same amount.

After December’s regular municipal council meeting Tuesday night, Owen McCarron, Antigonish Co.’s warden, said they have a good partnership with society members.

“They’re such (a) good volunteer group on the affordable housing,” he said. “When they made their presentation to us, (we) realized the benefits that it’s giving people that are less fortunate in our community, (and) we just felt it’s the right thing to do.”

McCarron said there are many benefits to the project.

He said good health starts with good housing.

“People develop better habits when they have good, secure housing,” he said. “Our council just felt it was an important step to make to show that we truly do value housing and projects like this.”

McCarron said their funding is contingent on society members securing other funding for the roughly $3-million project, and also on the project going to tender.
