Officials in the Town of Antigonish say summer did a number on their water levels.
After September’s regular town council meeting Monday night, Laurie Boucher, the mayor of Antigonish, said the town’s main water source- the James River Dam- remains low.
Boucher said they didn’t get the rain they needed the last few months.
“This summer (was) an unusually dry summer,” she said. “(It) seems even when we were predicted to get rain, it either went north or south of us in Antigonish- the Town of Antigonish didn’t seem to get any.”
Boucher said it’s not a new problem.
She said they noticed the same trend for three or four years.
“Our precipitation has been down over the summer,” she said. “That being said, staff has been looking into different ways to make sure we have water security.”
Boucher said they’ve installed water meters- which reduced consumption by 30 per cent- and put $40,000 into studies to determine what else can be done.
She said they expect the rainfall from Hurricane Teddy to restore water levels to where they need to be.
