What’s open and closed in Nova Scotia on Canada Day

Canada Day falls on Wednesday this year, bringing a number of closures and schedule changes across Nova Scotia.

Here is a general look at what to expect on July 1.

Food and retail

Most major grocery stores, shopping malls and large retail stores will be closed.

NSLC stores will also be closed for the holiday.

Some convenience stores, gas stations, restaurants, cafes and smaller local businesses may still be open, but hours can vary.

People are encouraged to check ahead before heading out.

Government, banks and mail

Federal and provincial government offices will be closed.

Banks and credit unions will also be closed.

Canada Post says post offices are closed on national, provincial and territorial holidays, with no regular collection or delivery of mail.

Some post offices located inside private businesses may follow the hours of the host business.

Municipal services

Municipal offices and services will vary by community.

Garbage, recycling and green cart collection may be moved to another day depending on where you live.

Transit, recreation facilities, pools, arenas and libraries may also be on holiday schedules or closed.

People should check with their town, county or municipality for local service changes.

What may still be open

Some restaurants, gas stations, convenience stores, pharmacies and tourism-related businesses may remain open.

Hours may be reduced, and some places may require reservations or advance booking.

People are encouraged to call ahead or check online before making plans.
