Why does the Census matter?

Every few years when the census shows up in the mail, there’s always a few people who say, “Why does the government need to know this stuff?”

The answer is simple: filling it out is one of the easiest ways to make sure your community gets what it actually needs.

Census numbers help decide funding for things like hospitals, schools, roads, public transit, emergency services, even seniors programs and childcare spaces. If an area looks smaller on paper than it really is, it can miss out on money and resources.

It’s about getting an accurate snapshot of Canada so communities can plan properly for the future.

It might take 10 minutes out of your day but it can shape the next 5 years where you live. Seems like a fair trade to me.

The 2026 Canadian Census is due on May 12, 2026.
