X-Men stave off elimination against Huskies

The StFX men’s hockey team has stayed alive.

The X-Men forced a fifth and deciding game in their AUS semi-final series against the Saint Mary’s Huskies with a 6-3 win at the Keating Centre Wednesday night.

The Huskies won the first two games in the best-of-five series in Halifax; the X-Men held serve on home ice with wins in games three and four.

After the game, Brad Peddle, StFX’s head coach, told The Hawk their effort was the game they needed to extend the series.

“Credit to the group- (Saint Mary’s) is a good hockey team, and to battle back and play that well two games in a row, especially game three being so short-handed, and then respond (Wednesday) with another great effort, it’s a pretty resilient group,” he said. “(There’s) lots of character, and it’s showing in this series.”

Captain Mark Tremaine, the player of the game for the X-Men, and Adam Stevens both scored twice; Adam Holwell and Port Hood’s Regan Spears had the other goals.

The series returns to Halifax for game five Friday night.

The winner advances to face UNB in the best-of-three conference final, and clinches a spot in the 2019 University Cup in Lethbridge, Alberta in March.
