Nature conservation group nabs new coastal wilderness area

A nature conservation groups says they’ve scored a big win in Inverness Co.

2000 acres of coastal wilderness in Inverness Co. is now protected by the Nova Scotia Nature Trust.

Executive Director of Nova Scotia Nature Trust, Bonnie Sutherland, tells The Hawk they’ve worked hard to get all the different pieces of land together for the new Mabou Highlands Conservation Lands.

“It’s a whole collection of individual properties but together they add up to this incredible contiguous, intact, coastal habitat that’s unroaded and at this time, undeveloped,” she says. “It’s, kind of, a rare opportunity with so much of our coastline fragmented, and developed, and roaded, so it’s very unique in the province.”

Sutherland says it’s the biggest coastal conservation area in the organisation’s 25-year history.

She says it’s important for people to have access to this kind of land.

“It means that the public will have the ability to access and enjoy a spectacular bit of coastal wilderness in Nova Scotia,” she says.

She says the next step is to find volunteers to help maintain and protect the land.
