NICHOLAS (Bernard), Harriet – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Harriet Nicholas, age 71, of We’koqma’q First Nation, who passed away peacefully in the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, surrounded by her family and friends. 

Born on September 18, 1954, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Mary (Googoo) Bernard. 

Harriet had a deep love for reading and cherished her collection of novels, often sharing them with others. In her younger years, she worked as a support worker at a women’s shelter in St. John N.B. before returning home to We’koqma’q. She enjoyed spending time at the We’koqma’q Gaming Centre and was well known for her unique sense of humor and playful spirit. 

Harriet is survived by her daughter, Laura Nicholas of Pictou Landing; her grandchildren, Sonya, Ashlyn, and Nina Nicholas; her sisters, Elizabeth Toney (We’koqma’q), Sarah Cope (Truro), Annabella Nicholas, Mary Josephine Googoo, and Lucille Bernard (all of We’koqma’q); her brother, Alexander Bernard (We’koqma’q); her godchildren, Adrian Googoo We’koqma’q and Craig Frances Pictou Landing ; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by Son Noel Nicholas ; Daughter Bernice Nicholas; Granddaughter Nova Nicholas all from Pictou Landing First Nation; her sisters, Alice Bernard, Mary Helen Googoo, and Bernice Bernard (in infancy); and her brothers, Harvey Bernard, Noel Michael Bernard, Jeffrey Bernard, and Matthew Bernard. 

Visitation will take place at the We’koqma’q Community Centre, 15 Reservation Road, We’koqma’q First Nation, on Thursday, May 7, 2026 beginning at 4p.m. 

Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at Blessed St. Kateri Parish, Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, We’koqma’q First Nation, with Father Joby Augustin officiating. 

Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
