Mary Gurney Scranton of Canso passed away peacefully in her 95th year at Eastern Memorial Hospital in Canso on Wednesday, April 29, 2026.

Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband, William (Billie) Scranton (2010) and her parents, Laura Gurney (1984), and Matthew Gurney (1991) and her sister, Margaret Penny (1960).

She is remembered by her nieces and nephews.

Mary was a creative person. She was talented at doing all kinds of sewing and needlework. She also was a water colour painter. Mary loved learning anything political or related to words.

Mary and Billie enjoyed entertaining and often invited people over in Queensport for a “feast”.

Mary was very proud of Billie, gifting Scranton land at Cooks Cove to the province for a park or a conservation area but was deeply concerned that the province wouldn’t honour the agreement.

Mary struggled in the past weeks, and we are thankful that she now rests in peace. Big thank you to the individuals who helped Mary in her hours of need.
