It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alphonse Lawrence Shannon that occurred at the Strait Richmond Hospital in Evanston on June 20, 2026.
Born in Martinique, he was the son of the late Melvin and Mary (LeBlanc) Shannon. At 16 years of age, Alphonse left Martinique on Isle Madame, for work in Halifax at A.M. Smith & Company fish plant and then at the waterfront as a dockworker at the port of Halifax. He returned home in 1970 and worked in construction at the Strait Richmond Hospital, the Port Hawkesbury Post Office and the Heavy Water Plant in Glace Bay. He then went to work at Britten’s Garage in Martinique. Alphonse or “Phonse” was a fixture at Britten’s for 25 years until his retirement in 1995. In 1972, he and his then wife Cecilia adopted Linda; who became the focus of his life and love. After retirement, Alphonse made a home in Louisdale in the senior’s apartments for over 30 years. He made many friends during those years especially Eleanor Sampson, who passed away earlier this year. Alphonse was a devoted grandfather to Shannon and Timmy, often attending hockey games and dance competitions to watch his grandchildren. He always took a genuine interest in their lives, eagerly following their daily activities and accomplishments. In his retirement years, he enjoyed walking, fishing and Cape Breton and Newfoundland fiddle music.
Alphonse is survived by his only daughter Linda (John) Ouellette, of Port Hawkesbury; grandchildren Shannon and Timothy Ouellette, both of Port Hawkesbury and his brother Lester (Pauline) Shannon, of Arichat and his nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his brothers Charles and Joseph Shannon; and sister Doris Clorey.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral mass will take place on Thursday, July 16th at 11 am at St. Louis Parish Church in Louisdale. A committal will take place following the mass in St. Hyacinth’s Cemetery in D’Escousse.
Memorial donations in memory of Alphonse can be made to the Strait Richmond Health Care Foundation or a charity of your choice.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to C. H. Boudreau Funeral Home Ltd., Arichat.
