Mayor says decision to leave REN was best for the town

Port Hawkesbury‘s mayor says the decision to leave the Eastern Strait Regional Enterprise Network came down to geography.

Town officials submitted their one-year notice of intent to withdraw from the REN in March 2018; they voted to follow through with that decision at a special council meeting Feb. 27.

Councillors also voted to apply for membership with the Cape Breton Regional Enterprise Network at their current budget amount.

After March’s regular council meeting Tuesday night, Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, the mayor of Port Hawkesbury, said they made a decision that was best for the town, largely based on geography.

“We certainly share synergies with all of our surrounding municipalities on both sides of the Strait of Canso,” she said. “In particular, we do share a lot of synergies and projects that we have presently with Richmond Co.”

Chisholm-Beaton said they’ll continue to be regional players, despite their departure from the Eastern Strait REN.
