Provincial officials set to divest Landry Lake facility

Town councillors in Port Hawkesbury are set to become part owners of their water utility.

They’ve formed an inter-municipal agreement with their Richmond Co. counterparts to create the Landry Lake Water Utility.

Officials with the provincial government are divesting the Landry Lake pumping station to them.

After March’s regular town council meeting Tuesday night, Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, Port Hawkesbury’s mayor, said the facility gives them the foundation of a strong, healthy, sustainable community.

“Since that is a water source that we use here in the Town of Port Hawkesbury, it made sense for the province to divest that to both Richmond Co. and the Town of Port Hawkesbury,” she said. “It’s important that the town has some control over their primary water source, and the quality of that water.”

Chisholm-Beaton said the transfer is expected to take place April 1.

She said there is no cost, other than their contribution to the utility’s reserve fund.
