Guysborough‘s warden says municipal officials should know more regarding a proposed gold mining project soon.
Vernon Pitts says he’s meeting with representatives with Anaconda Mining Inc. Thursday.
After October’s regular municipal council meeting Wednesday afternoon, Pitts said it’s believed bulk samples from the site in Goldboro were positive.
“A lot of people are wondering just what is there for gold,” he said. “I know you could actually see the gold in the pile, so it has to be substantial.”
Councillors approved a community benefits agreement with Anaconda reps at Wednesday’s meeting.
Pitts said he can’t divulge what’s contained in the agreement.
“It is a community benefits agreement with the municipality and Anaconda,” he said. “It was discussed in-camera (behind closed doors)- it’s a business case, and I’m not allowed to discuss it.”
Pitts said the contract has nothing to do with taxation.
He said they have similar agreements with various companies throughout the municipality.
