Annual community Christmas dinner coming up in Antigonish

Organizers say they’re putting the finishing touches on their ninth annual community Christmas dinner at St. James United Church in Antigonish.

The all-ages event is open to anyone.

Cary Connors, one of the dinner’s organizers, says they want to create a place to gather and build community.

Connors tells The Hawk the dinner is completely volunteer-run, and all food is donated.

“We’re really in awe and humbled by the support and generosity of people,” she says. “Some people are providing all of one thing, families are coming in and volunteering together and bringing items, desserts and things- it’s a beautiful showing of community heart.”

Connors says they welcome anyone who doesn’t have a place to go because they don’t have family, they’re away from family, or they just want a bit of community.

She says it’s important to make a space for people who would otherwise be alone on Christmas.

“We’re excited for this year, just to get together and see people get connected, and those who are alone to not be alone.”

Connors says they expect to feed roughly 150 people.

The dinner is held 2-4 p.m. Christmas Day.
