Antigonish Community Transit reps celebrating five years

It’s approaching five years since reps with Antigonish Community Transit put their first vehicle on the road.

The pilot project made its first run in Sept. 2014.

Madonna Van Vonderen, ACT’s general manager, tells The Hawk they bring value to the community.

“This is an essential service that is so incredibly important to so many people to allow them to access services and medical appointments, and just to get out of the house.”

Van Vonderen says they have four vehicles at this point- one bus and three book-a-ride vehicles.

She says they still need more, since they can’t keep up with demand, especially with their accessible van.

Van Vonderen says an addition to their book-a-ride service is coming soon.

“We hope have that on the road in early October to augment the services that we already provide so we can keep up with that.”

Van Vonderen says they do get provincial funding for the new vehicle, but they still need to fundraise.

She says they dropped their bus fare to $2 in July, which has created even more demand.
