Appeal of Antigonish development agreement dismissed

Members of the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board have dismissed an appeal of a development agreement in the Town of Antigonish.

John and Josephine Monkman appealed town officials’ approval of the development agreement for rental units at 52 Victoria St. in September; UARB members dismissed it in a decision released Friday.

After December’s regular town council meeting Monday night, Laurie Boucher, the mayor of Antigonish, said the appeal was the Monkmans’ next step after councillors approved the agreement in June.

“Council’s decision was to give (the developer) the permit to build, and then to do the development agreement,” she said. “Once the development agreement was reached, it was appealed by the Monkmans.”

Boucher said the UARB ruling validates their decision.

She said it shows they made the right call.

“Sometimes there’s a lot of emotion, but our decision has to be based on fact and following our Municipal Planning Strategy,” she said. “That’s exactly what we did.”

Boucher said the ruling means the developer can move forward with the project.
