Budget approval delayed

Port Hawkesbury‘s mayor says town officials hope to pass their budget by late June.

Councillors originally hoped to approve their 2019-20 budget at June’s regular town council meeting.

After Tuesday night’s meeting, Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, the mayor of the town, said they didn’t want to rush into anything.

“I think it’s more important that we take a little extra time to make sure that all of our councillors have all of their questions fielded, that they have an opportunity to talk about the various financial accounts and information.”

Chisholm-Beaton said they should be in a position to pass their fiscal plan June 25.

“I hope that we are able to bring our budget decision to a special public meeting,” she said. “That will be immediately following our Committee of the Whole (meeting) that will be occurring later in (June).”

Chisholm-Beaton said it’s still her hope they can maintain the current residential and commercial tax rates.
