Business owner says she’s grateful for support after post-Dorian thefts

The co-owner of a gas station in Inverness says they lost more than 300 litres of fuel when they opened following Hurricane Dorian.

Raylene Poirier says she’s disheartened someone would steal from them while they tried to help members of their community.

She says they opened their station on Central Ave. on generator power so people would have a place to fuel up the day after the storm.

Poirier tells The Hawk they’ve received a lot of support since people learned of the thefts.

“It’s been incredible, the outpouring of support from our community here in Inverness- it’s been just absolutely mind-blowing, it’s been wonderful,” she says. “We’re just overwhelmed by it, and we can’t thank our local community enough.”

Poirier says they had an idea gas was going unpaid for, but continued operating anyway; they had 300 litres unaccounted for by the end of the day.

She says their friends came in to help them as others were stealing from the station.

“A couple of friends came to give (her husband and co-owner) a hand- they were helping to get the customers through and in to pay for gas faster, and keep the line moving,” she says. “We’re very fortunate to have those friends, and our employees are wonderful.”

Poirier says they haven’t had anyone come forward to pay for the fuel, but they didn’t expect it, so they’re counting it as a loss.
