Councillors debriefed on Dorian efforts

The mayor of Antigonish says she’s very proud of the work of town staff members before, during and after Hurricane Dorian.

Councillors received a debrief on staff members’ efforts at September’s regular town council meeting Monday night.

After the meeting, Laurie Boucher, Antigonish’s mayor, said preparation and communication were key.

“Just letting people know what’s going on and where to look for some of the danger zones,” she said. “Clean-up was fantastic.”

Boucher said there wasn’t much damage- aside from some downed trees and power lines- and the only storm-related costs would be overtime for their workers.

She said it was a good test run, and they passed.

“Climate change the way it is, we probably will see these a little bit more frequently than we’ve seen them in the past,” she said. “I’m very confident that our staff will be able to handle what’s coming next.”

Boucher said there is still room for improvement.

She said two things they’ll work on for next time are staggering the hours of their workers and setting up a separate rest area away from their operations centre.
