Cameras take a bite out of illegal dumping

The Municipality of the District of Guysborough’s Warden says new hidden cameras have all but solved the area’s dumping problem.

Vernon Pitts says it’s especially frustrating because most of the dumped items can be picked up curbside.

Pitts tells The Hawk the cameras are well hidden and that’s part of their effectiveness.

“They helped immensely, just by people realizing the cameras are there, they’re not so inclined to dump now,” he says. “We’ve managed to catch a few with no major issues, basically what it came down to is: the individuals were told they were caught and they’re responsible to go in and clean it up.”

Pitts says those individuals have cleaned the illegal dump sites without further problems.
