Climatologist says we’re in for warm, dry summer

The top forecaster at Environment Canada says it should be a nice summer in the Quad Counties.

Summer officially arrived early Monday.

Dave Phillips, the senior climatologist at Environment Canada, tells The Hawk all the models he’s seen indicate warmer temperatures with below normal precipitation.

“As we come off of lockdown, I think that people visiting your area and just locals holidaying and touring around will have better than good weather to do that.”

Phillips says our spring had more precipitation than usual.

He says that’s left us in a good spot for a dry summer.

“Having already precipitation in the bank, you’re not into like we’re seeing in western Canada, parts of Ontario and Quebec where they’re into a very dry situation,” he says. “That’s not been the case so much in many parts of the Maritimes.”

Phillips says a good average for warmer than normal temperatures is one degree to a degree-and-a-half.

He says it may not sound like a lot, but you would feel it when you average it throughout a 90-day period.
