Councillors tighten sidewalk clearing standards

Municipal councillors in Inverness Co. have voted in favour of new, faster sidewalk clearing standards.

They voted to reduce the time allowed for clearing after the end of a snowfall to 24 hours- from 72 hours- during March’s regular municipal council meeting.

Laurie Cranton, Inverness Co.’s warden, tells The Hawk councillors have had complaints from residents across the municipality.

“People were finding that the length of time to get it done was just too long,” he says. “People- with their active lifestyles (and) especially with COVID- like to get out for their walk by themselves, and were having a difficult time on our sidewalks.”

Cranton says they heard those concerns loud and clear, so they took action.

He says they moved quickly to bring the updated policy into effect.

“We wanted to be able to utilize our staff to be able to do that,” he says. “We didn’t want to wait until spring- then, it wouldn’t really mean anything until next year.”

Cranton says there could still be one more storm this season, so they couldn’t delay making the change.
