District of Guysborough removes breed restrictions from dog by-law

A local municipality has updated their dog by-law to remove breed restrictions and to put responsibility for the dog on the animal’s owner.

The by-law passed after it’s final reading at the Municipality of the District of Guysborough’s regular council meeting Wednesday.

Warden Vernon Pitts tells The Hawk it makes the owner responsible.

“I think it’s great. I don’t think we should be banning dogs. As I stated previously, I think it comes down to the owner,” he says. “It’s putting more onus onto the individual owning the dog. It’s not the dog’s fault. It’s the fault of the owner of the animal, and the owner of the animal has to accept responsibility for that.”

Pitts says he only received positive comments on the updated by-law during consultations between first reading in November and passing it in December.
