Driver in fatal crash has case adjourned

The case of a woman facing various charges, including impaired driving-related counts, in relation to an Antigonish Co. crash that left a young boy dead has been adjourned.

Police say officers responded to the scene of the crash on South Side Harbour Rd. in Lower South River in July 2019.

They say three people were in the vehicle; one passenger, a three-year-old boy, died at the scene.

Tara Breukel, 33, was not in court when her case opened in October; at the time, her legal aid lawyer said Breukel was at a B.C. treatment facility, and she was still waiting for Crown evidence.

The Crown requested a publication ban in the case, and the judge granted it; that means we can’t tell you the victim’s name, or any information that could identify him.

Breukel’s election-and-plea hearing was adjourned in Antigonish Provincial Court Wednesday.

She’s set for another court date Oct. 21.
