The warden of the Municipality of the County of Inverness says she’s happy with the full ballot for the municipal election.
Two candidates were acclaimed, Alfred Poirier in District 1 and Laurie Cranton in District 2, but there are 14 people running for the remaining four seats.
After October’s regular council meeting Thursday, Betty Ann MacQuarrie told The Hawk it is a good thing.
“I think it’s great. I think that people coming out to run for office, to run as a municipal councillor, I think it’s great,” she said. “It keeps the rest of us on our toes.”
She said they aren’t the only ones; there are crowded ballots across Cape Breton.
MacQuarrie said it’s a good sign for local politics.
“It’s going to be a very interesting election,” she said. “We’ll see what’s happening around the tables after the fact.”
She says she expects voter turnout to be better than normal because of the alternative voting options municipalities have put in place because of COVID-19.
Residents go to the polls on Oct. 17.
